Staff Attorney, Immigration Intervention Project

Sanctuary for Families

Overview

The Staff Attorney is a key position within Sanctuary for Families’ Immigration Intervention Project (IIP), a legal services project within Sanctuary’s Center For Battered Women’s Legal Services, that represents thousands of survivors of domestic violence, other forms of gender based violence, and human trafficking in a broad range of immigration matters.

The Staff Attorney provides consultations and application assistance to immigrant victims of gender based violence in New York City. The Staff Attorney works directly with the Senior Staff Attorney(s) and Project Assistant(s) covered under the same funding agreement on the direct legal representation of immigrant clients; the caseload may vary and is determined, in part, by the terms of the funding agreement that covers the positions. Other responsibilities include conducting community outreach and education, and collaborating with other agencies, including those at the New York City Family Justice Centers, to best assist and empower immigrant survivors of domestic violence, other forms of gender based violence and human trafficking and to advocate on their behalf with systems affecting their lives. The IIP operates from 5 different locations in New York City; this Staff Attorney works out of the Manhattan office.

Responsibilities

Conduct screening interviews with immigrant survivors of gender-based violence to assess eligibility for immigration status under United States immigration law;

Represent immigrant survivors of gender-based violence, including by preparing and filing applications for U visas, VAWA-based adjustment of status, asylum, SIJS, naturalization, and/or other forms of immigration status;
Advocate with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and/or advocate and engage in motion practice to the Executive Office for Immigration Review, Board of Immigration Appeals, Administrative Appeals Office, and/or federal courts for the best possible outcome in clients’ cases;
Represent Sanctuary for Families at community events and on advocacy committees and task forces;
Advocate on behalf of clients with city and state agencies and institutions on issues of eligibility for housing, education, and public benefits;
Advocate on behalf of clients in family and criminal court proceedings, as needed;
Collaborate with district attorney’s offices, other local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, and community based organizations to improve responses to immigrant victims of gender based violence and human trafficking, and educate and provide technical assistance on issues relating to immigrant clients.
Contribute to Sanctuary’s efforts to educate the public, local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, social service agencies, community based organizations, and elected officials about issues related to immigrant victims of domestic violence; develop written materials and curriculum for such purposes.
Refer victims of domestic violence and gender based violence to appropriate legal and social services within and outside of Sanctuary for Families;
Maintain accurate records in electronic database of current and potential clients;
Perform other project duties or special projects as directed by Director.

Qualifications

Admitted to practice law in New York State;
Minimum of two years of experience in immigration law;
Fluency in English and a relevant community language (e.g. French, Spanish, Mandarin, Urdu, Bengali, Arabic, Russian)
Experience working with immigrant survivors of gender based violence and/or human trafficking;
Excellent judgment and attention to detail;
Strong writing and analytical skills;
Strong communication skills;
Excellent interpersonal skills;

Job Description

SGR is seeking an Immigration Paralegal to join its growing New York Immigration Practice Group. The Immigration Paralegal will report directly to the team’s Associate Attorney and ultimately to the Partner. The job duties of the Immigration Paralegal include, but are not limited to, the following:

Job Duties

Perform case initiation, initial fact gathering, and document review.
Assist immigration attorneys with full case lifecycle, including initial review and analysis of case documents, establishing case strategy, preparation of immigration filings with the appropriate government agency or office, and monitoring case status from initiation to approval.
Handle a diverse range of immigration cases, including nonimmigrant (B-1/B-2, E, F-1, H-1B, J-1, L-1), immigrant (PERM, I-130, I-140, AOS) naturalization (N-400) and other applications such waivers, FOIA requests, etc.
Serve as initial day-to-day point of contact for assigned case matters by communicating regularly with foreign national and company contacts regarding required documentation, case status and client inquiries.
Under supervision of an attorney, draft government forms and correspondences, including detailed support letters for initial immigrant, nonimmigrant and naturalization filings, Requests for Evidence (RFEs), Audit Responses and other government requests.
Perform administrative duties for assigned cases as needed, including updating case information into iTracker, creating file copies of government filings, maintaining organized case files, etc.
Conduct research on procedural and legal updates in the immigration field, as needed.
Contribute to the improvement of internal best practices, including assisting with the training and mentoring of new/junior team members, identifying areas for process improvement, etc.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree plus 5 years of experience in U.S. immigration, with a focus on employment-based immigration. In the alternative, SGR will consider 8 to 10 years of experience.
Must have experience with: Nonimmigrant visas (B-1/B-2, E-1/E-2, F-1, H-1B, J-1, L-1 and O-1 visas); PERM labor certifications; Immigrant visas (employment-based and family based); consular processing and Adjustment of Status applications; and U.S. citizenship and naturalization.
Strong knowledge of current US immigration procedures and requirements.
Demonstrated ability to multitask and work within a fast-paced, high-volume practice while meeting deadlines and maintaining a high level of productivity.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
